Tenacity and attention to detail uncovered a first SR&ED claim worth over $1M for Pine

Client Overview

Founded in 2021, Pine offers a digital-first, mortgage process to give every Canadian access to their mortgage documentation anytime, anywhere. Their platform is an alternative to the “big 5” banking institutions with a process that adapts to the needs of the client vs. the financial institution.

Pine had initially planned to work with their accountant to file their SR&ED claim but approached Zero to One Strategic when they learned of their expert approach. Given the considerable amount they had invested in R&D they wanted to ensure they did not underclaim.  

Challenge

When a business encounters a technological problem, a SR&ED project can potentially begin. Continued efforts to overcome this problem are essentially eligible SR&ED activities and a technological uncertainty is defined as an issue that proves challenging to overcome due to technological constraints and limitations.

Because of their unique business model, the team at Pine wasn’t confident that other providers would take the time to properly capture the work they were doing, but also capture the uncertainty that related to their mission statement as a whole.

Situations like this can often result in “surface level” claims that don’t consider the business as a whole, ultimately leave significant money on the table.

Solution

Through extensive interviews with the founding team, their lawyers, front-line customer support employees and the R&D team, Zero to One considered all elements of Pine’s business model as it related to innovation.

Ultimately it was determined that their digital-first platform available to users compiles legally binding contracts in real time, an innovation so novel it required extensive legal consultation, which in turn revealed a SR&ED opportunity that most others would not have taken the time to consider.

By taking this approach, every eligible facet of innovation was captured.

Impact

The Zero to One Strategic team successfully filed Pine’s first SR&ED claim and realized a 7 figure result for their team in their first year with no audit, less than 2 months after filing.

Pine could have engaged other SR&ED providers and been told they only qualified for a few small projects. Instead, the tenacity and thoroughness showcased by the Zero to One team resulted in uncovering the broader narrative of their eligible work.
